Honoring Your Natural Rhythm
Acting from a Quality of Presence
by Sylvie Olivier
We all have a natural rhythm.
It assists us in everything we do: working, cocreating, cooking, walking, caring for our environment, connecting with others, or bringing a project to life.
Honoring our natural rhythm means giving ourselves the opportunity to act while remaining fully present to ourselves and to what we are experiencing.
Our natural rhythm may be fast, slow, steady, gentle, or vary throughout the day. Its true measure lies elsewhere: in our Quality of Presence.
The Quality of Presence as a Point of Reference
When we are in the Quality of Presence, our attention remains open and available.
We are aware of what we are doing, what we are feeling, and what surrounds us. A sense of fluidity then assists our actions.
Our natural rhythm is the speed at which we can perform an activity while maintaining this Quality of Presence.
This distinction is precious because it invites us to recognize our rhythm based on our own experience rather than on an idea of what is fast or slow.
One person may complete an activity very quickly while remaining fully present. Another may choose a gentler pace and experience the same fluidity.
Natural rhythm is alive and unique to each person.
Recognizing the Moment When Our Rhythm Requires to Be Adjusted
Our experience continually offers us cues.
When our attention becomes overly focused on the task, when distraction arises, or when confusion sets in, we receive priceless information: our rhythm simply has to be adjusted so that we can regain our Quality of Presence.
We can then slow down, breathe, modify our movement, or take a few moments to center ourselves.
Presence once again becomes our point of reference.
Thus, rather than mentally determining the ideal rhythm, we discover it directly, in the moment, by observing the quality with which we experience what we are doing.
Presence at the Heart of Our Activities
When we honor our natural rhythm, the activity itself becomes an opportunity to connect with ourselves.
We can accomplish a great deal when energy is available and choose a gentler pace when it invites us to do so.
We can move forward quickly when things flow smoothly and slow down naturally when our experience calls for more space.
This attentiveness transforms our relationship to action.
Our day then ceases to be a succession of tasks to be completed. It becomes a living space in which every activity can be experienced with awareness, flow, and self-respect.
The Quality of Presence becomes the standard.
The natural rhythm becomes its expression.
Honoring the Natural Rhythm Within a Business
For an employer, a manager, or someone in a supervisory role, honoring the natural rhythm opens up a particularly interesting perspective.
A business has engagements, responsibilities, deadlines, and tasks to complete. Every person who contributes to it also has their own natural rhythm.
These two realities can evolve together.
Honoring the individual means recognizing that their most authentic contribution emerges when they can carry out their activities while maintaining their Quality of Presence.
Honoring the business means cocreating an environment that allows this contribution to fully support the business’s purpose, engagements, and responsibilities.
The question then becomes:
How can we accomplish what is required while allowingeveryone to maintain
their Quality of Presence?
This question transforms supervision.
Rather than evaluating only the speed of execution, the person in charge can also observe the quality with which the work is done: clarity, presence, fluidity, discernment, the quality of interactions, and each person’s genuine contribution.
Cocreating an environment where Presence can contribute
A person in supervision can support this approach by developing an open relationship with their team members.
It may address very specific questions:
- How consistently does this person remain clear and present?
- When do they naturally express their highest potential?
- How can we organize activities, priorities, and schedules to foster this Quality of Presence?
- What environment allows them to contribute fully, with clarity and fluidity?
This kind of listening also assists to identify adjustments that benefit the whole team.
Sometimes, a schedule can be adjusted.
A responsibility can be redistributed.
A priority can be clarified.
A way of working can evolve.
And certain situations simply invite us to recognize together what is truly possible in the current context.
Thus, honoring one’s natural rhythm becomes an opportunity for collective growth.
The individual develops the ability to recognize their own rhythm, express it clearly, and commit to offering their unique contribution.
The person in supervision remains aware of the bigger picture, the business’s engagements, and the reality of each person contributing to it.
The business can then engage in cocreating an environment where individual and collective realities come together with clarity, within a shared vision of what hass to be accomplished.
The Quality of Presence in Service to the Business
Honoring a person’s natural rhythm also means recognizing the uniqueness of their contribution beyond the quantity produced within a given time frame.
A person who is fully present can discern more clearly, communicate with greater precision, recognize more quickly what requires their attention, and contribute with a greater awareness of the bigger picture.
The Quality of Presence thus becomes an asset to the business.
It can influence how people collaborate, make decisions, set priorities, and use available resources.
In this way, the business and the individual can honor one another.
- The individual offers their contribution in accordance with their natural rhythm.
- The business provides an environment that fosters the sharing of everyone’s contributions.
- And both come together in a shared engagement to what requires to be accomplished.
The natural rhythm then becomes more than just an individual experience.
It becomes a conscious way of working together.
Exercise
Alignment Exercise at Your Natural Rhythm
Choose a simple activity that you do regularly.
Before you begin, take a few moments to feel your Presence.
Then start the activity at a pace that feels natural to you.
As you proceed, simply observe:
Am I maintaining my Quality of Presence at this pace?
- Be aware of your breath.
- Feel your body.
- Observe the quality of your attention.
- Feel your connection to what you’re doing.
You can then slightly increase your pace and observe what happens.
Then slow down and observe again.
In this way, discover the rhythm where action and Presence naturally come together.
When you feel clarity, openness, and fluidity, stay at that pace for a few moments to allow your body and your consciousness to recognize this experience.
Over time, this recognition becomes easier and easier.
You learn to feel your natural rhythm rather than determine it.
Living in the Rhythm of Our Own Presence
Honoring our natural rhythm is a very concrete way of honoring ourselves.
It’s about allowing our actions to align with our Presence, moment by moment.
Our rhythm can change.
Our activities can change.
Our energy can change.
And at the heart of all these shifts lies an accessible point of reference: our Quality of Presence.
When we give it this space, working, cocreating, and performing the simplest daily tasks become opportunities to live in harmony with ourselves.
Our natural rhythm is then much more than just a pace.
It becomes the movement of Presence throughout our lives.
